Nintendo Loses a Round in Palworld Patent Fight

Tue, 11/04/2025 - 4:12pm by nexusmaster

What’s happening?

The Japanese giant Nintendo + its partner The Pokémon Company sued indie developer Pocketpair (the makers of Palworld) back in September 2024. The suit claims Pocketpair’s game steals patented gameplay mechanics—like capturing creatures with throwable devices plus riding them in an open world.

Then: the Japan Patent Office (JPO) rejected one of Nintendo’s key patent applications (application 2024‑031879) because they said the idea wasn’t new (“inventive step” lacking).

Why you should care

  • If Nintendo can’t defend its patent, the whole case weakens, which could free up mechanics in games.
  • For you as a player or game‑maker: it’s a reminder that game mechanics can be really messy legally.
  • As a fan of Palworld (or just curious): you’ll want to watch how this plays out—changes could happen.

Key Facts

  • Nintendo claimed three linked patents to try to block or penalize Palworld.
  • One of those was rejected by the JPO, citing older games (like ARK: Survival Evolved, Monster Hunter 4, and Pokémon GO) as prior art.
  • The lawsuit is ongoing in Tokyo District Court. Nintendo is seeking damages plus perhaps an injunction.

What happens next?

  • Nintendo could try to fix or adjust the rejected patent and push again.
  • Pocketpair might use the rejection to argue all the patents are weak.
  • If the court rules in favour of Pocketpair, this might weaken Nintendo’s grip on similar mechanics.
  • If Nintendo wins, smaller devs might feel more cautious about creature‑capture and riding mechanics.
